That is warranted, but it is still slightly unfair. For some, faith isn't a process, and for others it is. I believe this is key philosophically and politically, despite having been all over the map myself. Some can still hold out for the redemption of the human spirit (from things like the rigid retardation you bring up) while trying to divorce mysticism and myth from any sort of actual divine authority.
