The Source of Evil

The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.

  1. Good quote.

Mankind is simultaneously capable of very righteous things and very evil things. It is part of our nature and definition. My question is, is that nature mutually exclusive with the existence of a source of good or a source of evil? Can said source inspire either good or bad in a human, leading to independently pursued behavior, without the relationship necessarily being a causative one? This supposition is the source of my persistent belief in either a god or a devil; ones that don't govern my life or actions, but indirectly attempt to intersect with them.

Or maybe I just like old ghost stories.
